Wireless Network Instructions
Welcome to the wireless network Information Services of Politecnico di Torino
In this page you will find the basic information to gain access to the wireless Lan Network of Politecnico di Torino. This is the only page of the Information Services portal which is written in English.
To access the Polito WiFi wireless LAN network, you need a laptop or palmtop with an IEEE 802.11a (5 GHz 54 Mbps),IEEE 802.11b (2,4 GHz 11 Mbps) or IEEE 802.11g (2,4 GHz 54 Mbps) compatible card. When you try to browse the internet, the system will present an SSL protected authentication page (https).
You also need a Politecnico e-mail account. Every student of Politecnico di Torino has an e-mail account related with the inscription number. For example if your inscription number (matricola) is 72621 you have an e-mail: s72621@studenti.polito.it

You just need to use your e-mail account and password to access the wireless network. You can send an e-mail to mail@studenti. polito.it to ask for your e-mail account.
Available Services
The HTTPS authentication method protects your credentials (username and password) through SSL, that gives a secure and easy mechanism, but doesn't offer any protection for the user data that is sent or received; for this security weakness, only some services with an application level protection are enabled:
- HTTPS to visualize protected web pages
- SMTPS, POP3S, IMAP4S to send and receive e-mail
HTTP is the only non-protected service available to browse Internet. You can also use SSH or VPN for secure connections.
Another methods of authentication will be available soon:
- Username and Password 802.1x PEAP (WPA) and VPN IPsec Tunnels.
- Digital Certificates 802.1x EAP-TLS (WPA) and VPN.
Accounting and Cross-realm Specifications
Polito Wifi supports authentication from some external realms while also polito users can be used outside campus wifi area. This feature is usually called Cross-Authentication and can be used under the following circumstances:
- UNITO and EDUROAM account can be used over all campus wireless area
- POLITO account can de used inside unito (Università di Torino) wireless area (both campus and residence)
